    Export Support from Sussex Chamber of Commerce

    UK exporters will at some point need export documentation. The Sussex Chamber is licensed to certify and arrange legalisation of export documentation.  The Chamber also assists exporters throughout the process of completing the documentation. Export documentation is required to comply with import regulations in the country of arrival, evidence the country of manufacture of the goods and ensure payment under a Letter of Credit. 

    Sussex Chamber can also offer guidance through its International Trade training. Courses include import and export procedures, commodity and tariff codes, becoming an AEO, controls and licensing, inward processing relief and much more. For more information visit the Sussex Chamber website

    Gatwick Meet the Buyer – International Opportunities

    The 2017 Gatwick Diamond Meet the Buyers event brings local, regional and national buyers together with local businesses in the region.  This event creates new business for those taking part and over £22.5m of business is estimated to have been created since 2010. There will be more than 2,000 sales meetings at the event which takes place on Wednesday 18 October 2017 at the Arora Hotel in Crawley.

    As a result of the reach of this event FICCI, a key membership organisation from India, will be attending to help businesses explore international sales opportunities with India.  FICCI is the voice of India's business and industry, drawing its strength from diverse regional Chambers of Commerce and reaching out to over 250,000 companies.

    Coast to Capital Confirms its Priorities

    A27 Worthing and Lancing improvements

    In line with the Government’s 2015 Road Investment Strategy, Highways England has committed to improve the A27 between Worthing and Lancing. They  have developed a scheme which they say aims to improve traffic flow, journey times, safety and accessibility, boost local economic growth and minimise the impact on the environment.

    They have announced the following  public consultation will run from 19 July to 12 September 2017. All responses to the public consultation will be considered by Highways England's project team. The closing date for responses is 11.59pm on 12 September 2017.

    HMS Shoreham arrives in port

    HMS Shoreham

    HMS Shoreham arrived in in its namesake harbour yesterday (5th July 2017) for a busy four-day visit with its captain pledging to “strengthen close bonds”between ship and town.

    The Royal Navy minehunter moored at Power Station Wharf and the commanding officer and ship's company were soon meeting the local community.

    One of the first ports of call on dry land was a reception hosted by Adur District Council Vice-Chairman Joss Loader at the Shoreham Centre.

    Other events on the schedule include conducting pre-arranged tours of the ship, hosting an on-board lunch and evening reception for local guests and attending an evening organised by the Shoreham Royal British Legion.

    Lieutenant Commander Ben Evans, who took command of the ship in March, said:

    “HMS Shoreham is very much looking forward to strengthening the close bonds of friendship and mutual respect which exist between the district and the ship.

    “The town has a long history as a seafaring port and a long history with the Royal Navy.”

    Adur District Council awarded the ship the Freedom of Shoreham in 2011 after an association going back centuries. The original HMS Shoreham was built in the town and launched in 1694.

    The current 600 tonne ship, the fifth to bear the HMS Shoreham name, was launched in 2001 and has a crew of 34. She will leave port on Sunday 9th July.

    Worthing proves it's "Right Now" as spectacular artwork is unveiled

    Right Now. That is the dramatic slogan today revealed within Worthing seafront’s striking new art installation.

    After a week of working through pouring rain, raging wind and scorching sun, artists have finally finished the Grafton car park installation, thought to be the UK’s largest ever outdoor artwork.

    And the message is clear Worthing is Right Now. The slogan is an anagram of the town name and the team behind the scheme wanted to send out a message that Worthing is moving forward.

    Backed by Worthing Borough Council the ambitious project is the brainchild of local firm ECE Architecture and award-winning agency Creative Forager, who were behind two previous groundbreaking works of art on Worthing beach.

    In 2015 Mirrored Beach Hut and Doorways last year earned rave reviews.

    Right Now has been earning similar plaudits from passers-by and posters on social media. The lettering is not immediately apparent but can be glimpsed through the brightly colour picture postcard colours used to reflect traditional seaside items such as deckchairs, sticks of rock and buckets and spades.

    Worthing Borough Council’s executive member for regeneration, Cllr Kevin Jenkins said: “I loved the idea and I’m impressed with the finished art.

    “We wanted to show that this town is moving forward. We have our problems like every seaside town but if you look closely there is an incredible amount of progress and huge ambition.

    “I agree with the message.  Our time is now.”

    ECE Architecture’s managing director Stuart Eatock said: “We have been working on ideas to engage people with architecture and creativity for three years. Right Now is about re-imagining a car park as a canvas, creating a new landmark for Worthing.

    “We want to thank the council for their amazing support, from the most senior levels backing the concept to the enthusiasm and support of the site team during installation.

    “This is a site that the council would like to regenerate. In the meantime, let's celebrate it and use it creatively. We hope this is just the start for Grafton."

    Mark Sephton, of Creative Forager said: “The image is inspired by the bright and bold colours and shapes of the sea front but on closer inspection spells out a positive phrase that the town can own. We're really Proud to have created  a supergraphic new landmark for Worthing.”

    Artist Rick Also, who used 600 cans of spray paint in the work, added: It was a really interesting challenge to create a piece of art at such a large scale, not only of how to cover such a big area and creating a design that worked around the window areas, but also to come up with a design that had impact from a distance and had a connection to the area.”

    Right Now cost £14,000, jointly funded by the borough council and ECE, and is currently planned to be in situ until the end of September.

    Grafton car park is listed for development by Worthing Borough Council with a mixture of homes, restaurants and retail and public space improvements favoured.

    Leader Welcomes 600 Homes Plan for Lancing

    The leader of Adur District Council has today welcomed the announcement of a deal with CALA Homes to build 600 new houses at New Monks Farm.

    The 600 form a large part of the council’s new housing provision in its emerging Local Plan and helps the authority meet its government target for house building.

    New Marks Farm Development Ltd, a subsidiary of Brighton and Hove Albion football club, has entered into a contract with CALA Homes (South East) Ltd for the development on the Lancing site.

    A total of 180 (30 per cent) will be designated affordable.

    Adur leader Cllr Neil Parkin said:” I am very pleased this contract has been signed as it will provide much-needed new homes in the area.

    “I am also very pleased that CALA Homes has been chosen as the company has a strong reputation for building quality homes.

    “I now look forward to seeing robust schemes for flood management and prevention and transport infrastructure to accompany the build.”

    Coast to Capital Newsletter - June 2017 

    Coast to Capital will be formally launching our 2017/18 Business Plan at our Partnership Board meeting at the end of this month.  The Business Plan sets out the work we intend to deliver over the coming year and highlights our priorities which include innovation, skills, infrastructure, business support, trade, housing and destination management.  We will be renewing our Strategic Economic Plan (SEP) this year and this meeting will be the start of a series of opportunities for businesses and partners to discuss the priorities for the region and engage with this important piece of work.  If you would like to input to the development of the SEP please complete this form to register your interest.


    Newhaven Open for Business 

    The Newhaven Enterprise Zone formally launched this week to around 100 guests including local businesses, residents and community leaders.  Over the next 25 years, the Enterprise Zone aims to facilitate the economic regeneration of the town and shift it to a higher value economy, refurbish existing and create new commercial floorspace, and create and sustain around 2,000 jobs.  Newhaven Enterprise Zone is a joint initiative between Coast to Capital and Lewes District Council and for more information read the full press release or visit our website


    Coast to Capital Supports Innovation

    Coast to Capital is providing £1.2m of Local Growth Fund to provide a state of the art testbed in Brighton to help small, innovative businesses across the UK develop new products and services that can benefit from 5G.  Set to be significantly faster than 4G, 5G is due to be rolled out across the UK from 2020 and will provide more stable connectivity and support the development of place-based technologies like driverless cars and connected smart cities.  The 3-year programme of engagement with businesses is supported by funding from Digital Catapult and is being led by Wired Sussex and the University of Brighton.  For more information read our press release


    £1.5m to Help Business Export

    Taking advantage of global markets is key to the future economic success of the Coast to Capital area.  To help achieve this we have allocated £1.5m funding to increase the support the Department for International Trade (DIT) provides to SME to achieve growth through international sales.  SMEs will be provided with a significant level of additional support, and subsidised activities and events.  This programme will not only bring significant benefit to SMEs directly but will also have a positive impact on the local community and economy through job creation and supply chain opportunities.     Supporting Strategic Growth Events

    This year, Coast to Capital will be supporting events across the region that align

    with our priorities and provide clear benefits to the region.  Our Sponsorship Fund has already supported Horsham STEMfest and Crawley STEMfest, events designed to inspire the next generation of scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians. These events culminate in the Big Bang Fair South East which takes place at the end of the month and is also supported by Coast to Capital. We are also lead sponsor of the British Science Festival which is co-hosted by the Universities of Brighton and Sussex and takes place in Brighton in September.  Applications for sponsorship funding from public, not for profit, voluntary, and social enterprise organisations will be invited in September.

    Our Stories; Your Councils

    Ten people who sum up the innovative and varied work of Adur & Worthing Councils will share their stories in a bid to inform the public about what they do.

    As part of a pioneering new move, the team of staff will give weekly updates on the Councils' main social media platforms and website, giving an insight into the daily life of a public servant.

    From managing a host of cultural venues to dealing with the street community or helping solve residents' problems, every aspect of the local authorities will be covered by the group.

    The aim is to give the public a chance to hear first hand the day-to-day challenges faced by those delivering a range of services across Adur and Worthing and to help grow understanding of the roles and functions of Councils.

    Each of the ten will regularly write posts which will appear on the Adur & Worthing Councils website and be publicised on the Councils' social media sites.

    Mike Gilson, the Councils' Head of Communications, said: "We want to show the human face of the Councils to help explain to citizens what we do.

    “The breadth and depth of what we do often goes unrecognised. I think we picked a brilliant group to help tell our stories."

    GRANTS can be a low risk form of finance

    What are grants? A grant is an investment in your business, but unlike a traditional investment, a grant does not need to be re paid. Grants are often viewed as: cash in kind, a subsidy, or even a gift in kind.

    They are ‘opportunistic’ but may not fund certain types of projects, types or stages of business, but if you are eligible to apply, it is free money. 

    Most grants are matched funded, meaning the business is also required to contribute to the overall cost of the project.

    Publicly funded schemes are designed to encourage new and growing businesses. To stimulate growth and ultimately create jobs. To help achieve this the government makes available a portion of money to encourage enterprise through business grants.  

    Reasons to apply for a business grant. Access to finance is important for growth and productivity. Grants will ease cash flow pressures and investment helps achieve a sustainable business.

    Often grants will unleash projects your business may not otherwise afford. Unleashing a new project can help achieve growth or generate new revenue streams. Grants contribute to expansion plans - boost innovation, which in turn helps your business grow. Grants make your investment and your working capital go further. 

    What sort of grants are available? Small business enabler grants tend to invest in projects like: web design, marketing materials, training & specialist consultancy support and are easy to apply for.

    The Adur and Worthing Small Business Grant is still available, (at time of going press) but apply soon, as the demand is high. The grant offers a maximum matched funded contribution of £2,500, available to local micro businesses (of up to 10 employees). For example, if you want to purchase equipment that costs £1,500, you can apply for £750 from the grant fund and source the additional £750 needed from your own funds. You must be able to demonstrate how the project will impact growth, help generate revenue or improve productivity or efficiencies. 

    Larger grant contributions of £10k plus, impose stricter criteria. They are often for capital Investment projects, such as: New equipment, premises & transport. The funder will ask for supporting evidence how the investment will impact growth and new employment opportunities.

    There is a substantial grant designed for rural businesses wanting to diversify or make a capital investment. Available to rural businesses who trade mostly across the South Downs, from £2,500 to £75,000. This grant is a 40% matched funded contribution.

    Join us in taking Forward Steps!

    We are delighted to announce that the official launch event for the Forward Steps CSR programme will be held on Friday 21st July at Heene Community Centre.

    Corporate Social Responsibility – known as CSR - can be a hugely beneficial part of any business, increasing brand awareness, helping to motivate and retain staff and creating trust.

    Business Connector for Business in the Community, Jon Stroud, is helping the Chamber to spread the word about our new Forward Steps programme and says, “I have seen first hand many times, just how beneficial even a small amount of CSR activity can be. When any company gets involved as the programme matches the requests up to the businesses, without them having to weed out lots of irrelevant requests first. Precious business time is saved and on the flip-side, no hopes are dashed in the process too. It really is a win-win.”

    So how does Forward Steps work?

    • 1.       Businesses sign up to the programme through our website, www.forwardsteps.org.uk They can be very specific in what they have to offer (NB: we are not asking for offers of money here) it can be anything from leftover pallets at your factory, to a meeting room one morning a week, to staff time for volunteering, to mentoring, training – you name it! Your provider offers are anonymously listed in different categories.
    • 2.       Only once we have enough businesses signed up we will launch to the local community. Those in need do not have to be charities, they can be any local community group that have a genuine need for help. They then search the offers and click on the relevant ones.
    • 3.       The business receives a notification that someone is interested in your offer. Only when the request is accepted does the person in need find out who the supplier is.

    It really is that simple!

    Gatwick Airport Results: Record year of investment takes Gatwick past 45 million passengers milestone

    • Gatwick Airport planning for continued growth as airport passes 45 million passengers
    • Annual results show passenger numbers +7.7%, EBITDA +12.9%, long-haul growth +13.6%  and cargo +15.9% on last year
    • Record growth has been matched with record results in quality of service for passengers
    • Gatwick CEO Stewart Wingate said: “It has been another record-breaking year and another chapter in the transformation of Gatwick. We have, this week, broken through the 45 million annual passengers mark which is 13 million passengers a year more than we served in 2009 when Gatwick came into independent ownership. It is a simple fact that, of the top 20 airports in the world by passenger growth, Gatwick is the only one with a single runway. We continue to offer the UK a financeable and deliverable second runway scheme which we stand ready to deliver should the Government give us the go-ahead.”

    Gatwick Airport today published its results for the year ended 31 March 2017 as the airport smashed through the 45 million annual passengers milestone. Gatwick has also just completed the biggest year of investment in the airport’s history as it continues to deliver on its ambitious plans for growth.

    The airport’s annual results published today, are the latest demonstration of Gatwick’s impressive growth record with 44.1 million passengers passing through the airport in 2016/17 - an increase of 3.2 million passengers or 7.7%. This growth has been matched by record levels of service for our passengers with customer satisfaction and advocacy at an all-time high.

    Long-haul continues to be a success story with routes growing 13.6% and now represent one in five of Gatwick’s passengers. As capacity issues become a challenge, Gatwick will continue to see considerable growth in passenger numbers as airlines swap short haul for long haul services. Norwegian’s new route to Buenos Aires using a B787 Dreamliner, for instance, will replace a short haul European service in Gatwick’s schedule.

    Gatwick is due to welcome the world’s longest low-cost long-haul route - to Singapore - this September. North Atlantic routes were up 38.7%, with the two new routes launched by Norwegian in the year, Las Vegas and Oakland, San Francisco, contributing to this growth. Norwegian are set to further increase their US routes from Gatwick with Denver and Seattle starting September 2017 and a further direct route to Buenos Aires starts in February. Meanwhile, China Airlines will be adding to Gatwick’s Asia routes and starting a new service to Taipei in December 2017, bringing Gatwick’s total long-haul routes to 60.

    Stewart Wingate, CEO of Gatwick Airport, said:

    “It has been another record-breaking year and another chapter in the transformation of Gatwick. Our continued growth and success is a testament to record investment, increased competition, and our renewed focus on efficiency and service. It is a simple fact that, of the top 20 airports in the world by passenger growth, Gatwick is the only one with a single runway. We continue to offer the UK a financeable and deliverable second runway scheme which we stand ready to deliver should the Government give us the go-ahead.

    “Our world record passenger numbers and increased long haul connectivity has been matched by a transformed airport experience which our passengers have recognised by giving us all-time high service quality results. We have, this week, broken through the 45 million annual passengers mark which is 13 million passengers a year more than we served in 2009 when Gatwick came into independent ownership.

    “Gatwick has a bright future – we will invest £240 million this year as we continue our £2.5 billion programme to improve our facilities, improve our service and passenger experience, and improve our performance so we can realise our ambitious plans to grow even further.

    “This will lay some of the physical groundwork for our continued growth. Improvements planned include an extension to Pier 6 and changes to the taxiway configuration to improve efficiency on the airfield even further.”

    Average seats per air traffic movement increased by four seats per movement reflecting the airport’s increased long-haul flights. Meanwhile, air traffic movements increased by 4.9% to 280,000 ATMs annually, with the airport serving more than 177,000 passengers in its busiest day. Gatwick’s vital role within the UK economy was demonstrated by growth on domestic routes of +10.3%, as passengers took advantage of the regional services available from the London airport best connected to the rest of the UK.

    Unprecedented growth

    • Revenue up 7.7% to £725.0 million. Combined with carefully controlled cost management, this resulted in EBITDA up 12.9% to £373.6 million and a profit before tax of £131.8 million
    • The year ended 31 March 2017 was the busiest in Gatwick’s history with 44.1 million passengers, an increase of 3.2 million passengers or 7.7% passengers
    • Gatwick’s growth is a combination of more planes, bigger planes and fuller planes – average load factors have increased to 85.2%
    • North Atlantic routes were up +38.7%, with the two new routes launched by Norwegian in the year, Las Vegas and Oakland, San Francisco, contributing to this growth
    • Passengers travelling to the Caribbean and Latin America increased 11.8% with British Airways having introduced new routes to Costa Rica and Peru.

    New routes and terminal developments

    • Following two years of meticulous planning, one of the most complex projects Gatwick has ever undertaken was successfully completed as British Airways moved operations to the South Terminal and easyJet and Virgin Atlantic were consolidated in the North Terminal
    • Growth across a broad range of travel markets with long-haul traffic, European business routes and destinations in combining to fuel a record-breaking year
    • Several airlines have increased frequencies on routes and introduced new destinations with Cathay Pacific increasing, to daily, the frequency of their Hong Kong service and Rwandair providing a new service to Kigali
    • New routes from Gatwick include four new services from Norwegian - Singapore,Seattle and Denver starting this September, and Buenos Aires starting in February 2018
    • China Airlines will be adding to Gatwick’s Asia routes and starting a new service to Taipei in December 2017
    • Gatwick featured on the list of the fastest growing airports based upon Airports Council International‘s statistics for 2016. Growth is based upon the yearly change in passenger traffic between 2015 and 2016; only the world’s top 50 airports by passenger number were included
    • Gatwick has recently announced that Jamie Oliver will bring a new flagship restaurant The Diner to the airport, while Reiss and Jack Wills have joined the airport’s range of retail stores.
