Worthing’s Mayor Noel Atkins will officially launch pedaling along the prom on Sunday 28 March at 12 noon. The mixed use pathway, which is being trialed for 12 months, opened earlier this month. The scheme is thanks to a partnership of Worthing Borough Council and West Sussex County Council with work managed by the County Council's Highway Contractors, May Gurney.
The launch promises to be a fun event with bells to give away, courtesy of local bike shop Quest Cycles and an Easter Egg Hunt organised by the Town Centre Initiative and funded by Worthing Borough Council. .
Find a word hidden between the Pier and the Lido associated with Easter. The first 100 to come to the Tourist Information Office on the Promenade between 12pm and 2pm and tell them the word will win an Easter Egg
Cabinet member for regeneration and cycling champion, John Rogers said: “It’s been great to see so many people using the path for cycling as well as walking. I’m looking forward to cycling along the prom and enjoying the summer in sunny Worthing.”
West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning and Transport, Derek Whittington, said: "We have been delighted to work with the Borough Council on this project which will provide a new route for cyclists which I'm sure will be well used and popular. I am aware that some people have concerns about pedestrians and cyclists sharing the pathway but we have seen in many other areas that this can be a success provided everyone is considerate of other people. The promenade is for everyone and I hope this trial will increase the number of people who are able to share and enjoy it."
Local cycling group Worthing Revolutions are supportive of the shared path scheme. Jim Davis said: “The Worthing Cycle Forum is very pleased that cycling for everyone regardless of age, ability and levels of mobility can now be responsibly enjoyed on one of Worthing's best assets."
“It's great to see a progressive move being made by Worthing so the humble bicycle can be used respectfully and safely on a leisure route that now stretches from the prom all the way to Brighton and beyond."
“It's a wonderful opportunity for families to ride with the very young so everyone can enjoy the seaside with everything that Worthing has to offer."
"It's a reliable, healthy, cheap and fun way to get you to and from the prom too.”
